Povestea unei crime și a unei trădări. Trudy dezvoltă o pasiune bolnăvicioasă pentru Claude, cumnatul ei. Împreună, urzesc un plan pentru a-l ucide pe John, soțul lui Trudy. Întreaga poveste e relatată de un fetus, copilul nenăscut al lui Trudy și John, mator aparent pasiv al întregii conspirații. Cartea curge interesant, suspansul e construit gradual și profilul psihologic al personajelor e bine conturat. Este, totuși, stridentă inserția repetată de citate din Shakespeare; afectează, uneori brutal, fluența textului. La fel se întâmplă și cu reflecțiile fetusului legate de situația politică a lumii contemporane, de crizele umanitare și identitare ale Europei. În astfel de momente, se simte că naratorul (un fetus, până la urmă) își depășește deranjant condiția. Deși interesant și bine scris, romanul mi se pare a fi sub „Atonement” și chiar „On Chesil Beach”. Textul are o încărcătură dramatică pe care Ian Mc Ewan nu o exploatează suficient de mult și suficient de bine.

The story of a murder and of a betrayal. Trudy develops an obsessive passion for Claude, her brother in law. Together, they concoct a treacherous plan to kill John, Trudy`s husband. The entire story is told by a fetus, the unborn child of Trudy and John. The fetus becomes a witness of the entire conspiracy. The story flows interestingly, the suspense is gradually built and the characters` psychological profiles are well shaped and clearly defined. Despite all these qualities, it becomes rather strange and irritating the repeated insertion of Shakespeare` s quotes; many times, the internal rhythm of the novel is discontinued. In the same way, the reflections of the fetus on various political issues seem to be out of place. Although captivating and well written, I think „The Nutshell” is not as good as „Atonement” or even „On Chesil Beach”. The story has a tremendous potential and dramatism… the feeling is that Ian Mc Ewan fails in properly and fully exploiting them.
