Publicat pentru prima dată în 1909, romanul lui Jack London nu impresionează neapărat prin povestea sa, ci prin stil și, mai ales, prin bogăția ideilor exprimate. Martin Eden este un muncitor needucat care se îndrăgostește de Ruth Morse, o tânără născută într-o familie burgheză. Pentru a putea ajunge la inima lui Ruth, Martin începe un vast proces de autoeducare. Pe parcursul lui, descoperă pasiunea lui pentru scris. Martin ajunge la o înțelegere a lucrurilor care depășește orizontul burghez limitat al familiei Morse. La capătul drumului, Martin Eden, de acum un scriitor cunoscut și un om bogat, pierde orice rațiune de a exista. Drumul lui Eden spre cunoaștere e magistral descris și surprins de Jack London. Socialismul, filosofia, istoria, biologia, estetica, toate devin subiecte de conversație și reflecție. Martin Eden este un personaj atât de credibil, atât de bine construit, încât susține de unul singur întregul eșafodaj narativ al textului. Un roman pe care e greu să-l lași din mână.

Initially published in 1909, Jack London`s novel does not impress its readers by the story itself, but by style and, moreover, by the richness of the ideas it discusses and debates upon. Martin Eden is an uneducated young proletarian who falls in love with Ruth Morse, a girl born in a bourgeois family. Trying to level up to Ruth, Martin finds himself on a difficult path to knowledge. In the process, he discovers his passion for writing literature. Ultimately, Martin understands and makes sense of ideas and concepts that are much above the understanding of the Morse family. At the end of the path, Martin Eden finds himself a well-known writer and a rich man. At the same time, he loses the meaning of his own life and existence. Martin`s path to knowledge is brilliantly portrayed by Jack London. Socialism, Philosophy, Biology, Aesthetics –  all are topics of interest, conversation and reflection. Martin Eden is such a veridic, strong character that he sustains by itself the entire narrative.
